The Government has acted to bolster security measures at HMP Manchester following an Urgent Notification issued by Charlie Taylor, HM Chief Inspector of Prisons, in October.
The notification was published after inspectors found significant levels of drugs and violence – including a high number of weapons and serious assaults compared to all other prisons. The inspectors’ report also noted “dilapidated” conditions such as broken windows and poor levels of cleanliness, including a chronic rodent infestation.
The Ministry of Justice has produced an action plan that will see bolstered security measures plus improved staff training. A new intensive pest control plan is already being implemented. A new CCTV system will be installed; increased netting will be placed across the site to combat drones; and an increased clampdown on smuggling of contraband will be launched. A dedicated team has been created to identify and address any urgent repairs needed.
